Let's discuss this mega issue that is volunteering.
Does it make sense? is it beneficial or is it simply exploitation.
Over the years we have seen many young people apply for paid roles at the Foundation. What has been evident is the lack of experience young people bring. In many other countries it is common to see teenagers and young adults taking on voluntary and part time work as a means to gain both experience and to start to make an income.
My advice is this- as a young person it is important to get experience! The earlier you start to gain experience the volunteering the quicker your route to paid employment. I am not advocating for underpaying anyone, or continuing to take on voluntary role to your financial detriment. Rather I am encouraging young people to be passionate enough to want to explore their desired field of work. By volunteering you have an opportunity to identify the skills you require but also you gain practical experience that a book could not otherwise provide. Leveraging volunteering experiences can give your job applications an edge over other students! For mature students or those seeking a career change it is equally beneficial as volunteering provides an opportunity to get a foot in the right door into a particular industry and when looking to make a career change.
Volunteering is not always just an good path for career development but also for wider personal development. By giving of your time to your passion, chosen charity or community in need you gain essential soft skills and are able to meaningfully contribute to society which is both emotionally fulfilling and mentally rewarding. Volunteering is also a fantastic way to meet people, grow your networks and to make friends. These networks can prove priceless later on in life as you switch roles, give or even seek referral letters.
Wow! The possibilities for personal development through volunteering are truly endless! The areas mentioned above are just the beginning - there are so many more waiting for you to explore. By volunteering, you are not only developing yourself, but also finding personal satisfaction in ways you never thought possible in your daily routine. Get ready to unlock your full potential and experience the amazing benefits of volunteering!
