STAYING SANE DURING SELF-ISOLATION.

By Rutendo Masunda & Ratidzo Njagu

Self-isolating may sound like a dream but after a while it can become mentally and emotionally draining, particularly if you don’t have a plan. In this article we will share our top tips to help you stay sane. Although getting your work done is important so is maintaining your mental and physical health. Choose to create boundaries between work and your personal life. It will help you to achieve both peace and productivity.

Self-Isolate

1) Have a schedule and stick to it.

Whether you are a student, a self- starter, employed or an employer you need to establish a routine. Work during set hours and give yourself regular breaks. While working remotely means an added flexibility and a chance to deal with personal matters it helps to stick to a schedule in order to maintain productivity. Setting an alarm and making your bed everyday is a great place to start!

2) Get Dressed!

It is extremely tempting to stay in your pyjamas but you will feel so much better if you start with your regular morning routine- freshen up! Get up, brush your teeth and take a hot or cold shower. Make an effort to get dressed. If you are both clean and comfortable it will leave you feeling renewed and ready to conquer the day!

3) Get Connected.

To avoid feeling isolated, connect with both nature and people. Spend some time outdoors exploring the beauty of nature and reflecting. Be intentional about prioritising your mental health. Similarly find ways to communicate effectively! Being isolated doesn’t mean you stop communicating. Use video technology such as Skype, Whatsapp or Zoom to connect with your family, friends and colleagues. Communication is essential to building meaningful relationships.

4) Create your workspace

Designate a room or some desk space for your work. While working in different spaces can be great for creativity, it's always helpful to know you have a designated workspace where you can easily locate your stationery, folders etc.

Remember to be kind to yourself during this period of uncertainty. If you’re struggling with this new reality remember to breathe- you will get through this!
