Mental Health Matters

Mental Health refers to our mental, psychological and social wellbeing. Take the time to invest in your mental health. The resulting disease burden stemming from mental illness is among the highest of all diseases. In any given year, an estimated 20% of Zimbabweans suffer from some form of mental illness ( Chirisa, 2018). It is up to us to break the cycle and take care of our mental health wherever possible.

As part of further understanding the mental health space in the wake of Covid-19, we conducted a basic baseline survey for 100 women in Zimbabwe (ages 19-40) and the following results came up: - 100% believe that women in Zimbabwe can benefit from increased mental health awareness.

Do you know where you can access mental health support?

Have you ever struggled with your mental health?

We also found the following:

- 69% of all participants identified as increasingly struggling with Anxiety.

- 35% of participants identified as increasingly struggling with Depression.

So what does this mean?

Our Mental Health is something that we all need to take active steps to manage. First of all remember there is nothing to fear, you are not alone so take a deep breath. Second, be kind to yourself- its important to know that there are plenty of resources out there to help you out and absolutely no shame in seeking help. As we begin to talk more openly about mental health and seek support services, mental health stops being an issue we suffer from silently. Together we can do more to inform and equip women on mental health management.
