Periods aren't exactly always the happiest time of the month as most women deal with cramps, fatigue, mood swings and an array of other uncomfortable symptoms. However, this should not fill us with dread as there are many things you can do to help make your period a happier time. Here is a list of some of the things you can do to make your period pleasant.
Reducing Pain
Menstrual cramps are completely normal as they are caused by muscle contractions within the uterus. These mild cramps can be dealt with in a number of ways:
Use a heating pad on your lower abdomen or lower back
Take a warm bath
Massage your abdomen
Ask your doctor about using an over-the-counter pain reliever or anti-inflammatory drug
Exercise. You can take a walk, a swim or any light exercise.
If experiencing severe cramps, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor as it may be a sign of something more serious.
Track Your Period
Tracking your period helps you to identify the different phases of your menstrual cycle and allows you to start to understand your symptoms. It is also a fantastic way to plan and ensures that you know when to expect your period. You can now easily track your period using the Kunashe Foundation Blossom App- simply download this on the Google Play Store.
Alleviate Bloating
The period bloat is a common symptom you can experience before and during your period, making you feel like you’ve gained weight or have a tight and swollen abdomen. Few tips you can do to help reduce bloating;
It might seem odd that you need to drink more water when you're feeling the most bloated, puffy and full, but the more water you drink, the better.
Be sure to carry a water bottle with you and try to fill it up several times throughout the day.
Eat healthy foods like proteins, healthy fats, and try reaching for healthier snacks like fruits and veggies or other low sodium foods.
Avoid eating processed and salty foods as they contribute to increased bloating.
If you want something sweet, consider dark chocolate, it's a good source of magnesium which can help regulate serotonin and elevate your mood.
Avoid caffeine as it can irritate your stomach and give you that achy, crampy, bloated feeling, so it's best to limit your intake on your period.
Getting good rest can help your body and mind repair, aim to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.
Your period is not your enemy. On the contrary, it's a sound barometer of your overall health. So prioritize your health and take active steps to make your period pleasant.
