Infant feeding practices have been a topic for debate for decades. The main question being around what is better- breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
Breastfeeding is a natural yet often initially difficult activity. Many women lean towards breastfeeding because it is cheap, efficient, and highly recommended by WHO. Breastfeeding also allows mother and baby to bond and helps babies to develop immunity against diseases and infections. Given the latter, it is safe to say breastfeeding is the preferred option for feeding. However, it is not the easiest, most efficient method for every mother out there, nor is it always possible for all mothers. Thankfully bottle-feeding formula or expressed milk provide helpful alternatives.
Bottle feeding (formula or expressed milk) has been looked down upon for many years but carries many advantages particularly for working mothers who may not be able to work from home or manage their schedules.
Bottle feeding also provides additional support for supplementary feeds when a baby is not gaining enough weight or struggling to breastfeed, it is also a great alternative for those who are not allowed or able to breastfeed.
Although it requires more hygiene practices, the introduction of alternative feeding methods has relieved pressures on mothers who have various challenges when it comes to breastfeeding. Having an alternative method of feeding your child also puts less pressure on mothers who may be finding it difficult and can improve their mental health. If you decide to practice bottle feeding remember to wash your hands and handle the bottles for the safely.
So what is better - breastfeeding or bottle feeding? Our answer - It depends on your needs as a mother. Each mother is unique and requires a form of feeding that works for her and her baby. At the end of the day, what matters is having a healthy, fed and happy baby.
